Going for the Gold

The Go for the Gold Futurity is designed for breeders to have an opportunity to promote their stallions by exhibiting their foals in futurity classes. The futurity will take place this year during Color Breed Congress.  On November 3rd & 4th 21 classes will take place in the Ranger Arena at the Tulsa Fairgrounds for the Go for the Gold Futurity. These classes will feature weanlings, and yearlings, along with a two-year-old Snaffle Bit class and a three-year-old Ranch Rail class.

The committee consisting of Libby Crandell, Marilyn Donahay, Robert Meyers, along with Sam and Anita Westfall help work together for the Go for the Gold Futurity. Marilyn works with the stallion owners getting donations, gathering awards, sponsorships, along with event management tasks. Libby runs the Go for the Gold Futurity and can answer any questions regarding the futurity. Sam and Anita Westfall from Claremore, Oklahoma, help provide ideas for the future of the futurity. The Go for the Gold Futurity began with Lois Smith in 1994. She passed away three years ago where she continued to be involved until the last year of her life.

“Lois always had someone helping her,” said Anita Westfall, Go for the Gold Futurity committee member. “She was the boss; she would give the okay to a good idea and it would be a go.” The futurity is aimed at people who don’t show horses to make a living, Anita explained. Go for the Gold pays ten placings for each class.

The Go for the Gold Futurity started out with weanling and yearling halter with 2 year old western pleasure and to stay current with the market we have added Non-Pro in most classes, Anita said.

“Part of the incentive and charm is that we make it for everyone,” Anita said. “Everyone that is entered in the futurity gets a gift.”

The Go for the Gold website lists all the stallions that are eligible for the futurity, Anita explained.

“For most contracts, stallion owners who donate 1 breeding receive 10 percent payback on any babies that win in the futurity as well as a free slot in the futurity,” said Sam Westfall, committee member.

At the shows, the stud and mare owners are recognized by the announcer, as well as on the Go for the Gold website, Sam said.

Go for the Gold offers Buy-In Breedings to any recognized stallions that might not have been aware of the program but want to participate. Buy-In rules are under the forms section of the website.

The Go for the Gold Futurity started with the Oklahoma Palomino Exhibitors Association, Sam said. Sam went on the say, “We then broadened out to other colors in the horse industry.

At this year’s Color Breed Congress, Cash for Color classes will be available and is a great incentive for people just as interested in the Go for the Gold Futurity, Sam added.

“Cash for Color overlaps and compliments Go for the Gold Futurity,” Anita said. “We have a yearling eligible for all classes because we bred to a stud that is in both incentives.”

The pre-entry deadline is open until September 15th and all the forms can be located on their website. If interested in entering the futurity, contact Libby Crandell. For more information on stallions or donations contact Marilyn Donahay.
